My yearly winter outlook verification post is out! Come for the stats, stay for how I managed to use an ice cream cone and French bulldog in an analogy.

NOAA Climate.gov@NOAAClimate

At the ENSO Blog, it's time for their yearly explainer on how scientists grade seasonal outlooks including a look back at this past winter's temperature and precipitation outlook.

Tomorrow, @IPCC_CH will release the Synthesis of the 6th Assessment, summarising all six of the previous component Reports.
There will be no surprises.
Human activities, mainly burning fossil fuels, have already warmed the climate by more than 1°C, causing severe impacts.

If you are wondering why 2022 sea level rise (0.27cm) is less than the trend (0.44cm per year), you can probably blame La Niña/nIOD. Heavy rains over Australia and Asia actually remove water from the oceans and place it over land. In 2010-12 La Niña sea level dropped 0.5cm! https://twitter.com/omgnasa/status/1637149665262198785

Josh Willis@omgnasa

The rising oceans measured by satellites. Sea levels have gone up globally by over 9 centimeters in 30 years and the rate of rise has more than doubled in that time. #sealevelrise #NASA

Really nice essay on El Nino, and the model/obs disagreement that we covered at the ENSO Blog https://www.climate.gov/news-features/blogs/how-pattern-trends-across-tropical-pacific-ocean-critical-understanding-future

Adam Sobel@profadamsobel

The possibility of an El Niño later this year was an excuse to write about other issues too, esp. the possibility that models may be getting trends wrong in the tropical Pacific.
